Human Farm Investigation City Quests and Topside Investigation
Errands outside the farm that feed evidence, trust, and scene unlocks.
Why city quests matter
While the underground farm is Iori’s cover workplace, city quests drive the investigation forward in Human Farm : Investigation :. Topside errands supply evidence, unlock items, raise trust with Maria, Rui, Tsubaki, and Alice, and gate scenes that never trigger if you stay underground too many days in a row. Skipping city content is the fastest way to miss endings — not just optional gallery entries.
This guide explains quest types, scheduling, and map references. Pair it with City Locations for coordinates and How to Play for the daily loop.
When city travel unlocks
After early farm tutorials (post-Day 1 in the full game), Iori can usually reach designated city districts during daytime slots. Exact unlock timing differs slightly if you blew cover tutorials or rushed farm night scenes. If travel icons stay gray, finish the current Tsubaki objective or sleep to advance the calendar.
The demo ends before full city access — demo players should read this page for planning but expect to experience quests only after purchasing the full Steam app 3953160 release.
Quest categories
Evidence gathering — Photography, tailing suspects, retrieving documents. These increment investigation meters detailed in Investigation Mechanics. Fail states often raise suspicion if you interact with wrong NPCs.
Supply and delivery — Fetch items for Maria’s cafe operations or police drop points. Rewards include consumables listed in Items.
Social chains — Alice’s performer storyline and Maria’s handler dialogues span multiple city visits. Missing one day may delay the whole chain by twenty-four in-game hours.
Timed events — Festival days or concert nights appear on fixed calendar dates in Story Overview. Mark them on your Scene Checklist early.
Optional flavor — Short scenes that do not block endings but add epilogue lines (+ endings in wiki stats).
Planning a split day
Optimal days combine farm minimums with city objectives:
- Morning farm check-in to avoid suspicion penalties
- Travel topside before noon triggers expire
- Complete one primary quest marker
- Return underground before evening scene windows
- Night event if flags allow
Enable run mode — without it, round trips waste the slot. See Settings and Run Mode.
Key NPCs in the city
Maria — Handler and cafe operator. Her quests align police strategy with undercover safety. Prioritize her requests before optional farm grind when routing toward true ending.
Rui — Field support with overlapping but not identical objectives to Maria. Some endings favor Rui’s evidence chain — Police Allies compares their flags without late-game spoilers.
Tsubaki — Station liaison; quests often involve paperwork and deadline pressure. Ignoring Tsubaki blocks raid timing.
Alice — Singer with city venue scenes. Her chain pulls you to performance districts mapped in City Locations.
Farm residents (Aina, Karen, Boss) occasionally appear in city-side scenes but primary farm quests remain on the underground map — Underground Farm.
Investigation rewards
City quests feed:
- Evidence file percentage for raid eligibility
- Unlock tokens for cafe back room scenes (Cafe Hub)
- Items required in True Ending Checklist
- Trust modifiers that change dialogue on final nights
The game rarely telegraphs “quest failed forever” — instead, scenes silently fail to trigger. When in doubt, keep a save before leaving the city.
Common mistakes
Farm-only grinding — Players maximize farm-shift stats while investigation stalls, producing incomplete investigation endings.
Late returns — Missing the subway or travel trigger back to the farm locks evening scenes even if city quest succeeded.
Duplicate errands — Some quests cannot be repeated; delivering items to wrong NPCs consumes them — verify in Items.
Patch mismatches — Steam-cut clients may hide quest markers tied to restored scenes. Install Official Patch before assuming a quest is bugged.
Advanced routing
Second playthroughs should stack city quests by dependency order from the Scene Checklist:
- Complete Alice’s multi-day chain before raid lock
- Finish Maria evidence handoffs before choosing Rui-exclusive branches
- Schedule Tsubaki deadlines on run-enabled days with no optional farm events
Speedrunners skip optional flavor but not evidence gathers — see Ending Routes for minimal paths.

City quests are not filler — they are the investigation. Treat topside days as mandatory appointments, not optional sightseeing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
When can I first leave the farm?
Usually after early tutorials in the full game — not in the Day 1 demo.
Do city quests expire?
Many are day-locked; missing the window delays or fails the chain.
Which NPC is highest priority?
For true ending, balance Tsubaki evidence with Maria strategy — see [Police Allies](/characters/police-allies/).
Can I finish the game ignoring the city?
You may reach an ending, but not the true route or complete investigation outcomes.
